English Translation
During the 2010 soccer World Cup, Japanese national team coach Takeshi Okada explained his theory of team organization. Noting that a loosely organized team was preferable to one that is rigidly structured like a pyramid, he argued that the latter, where everyone does exactly what the coach tells them, cannot be conducive to exciting and dynamic play.
His point was that each player must think on his own of how he can contribute to the team and act accordingly, not let the coach decide for everyone. True to his conviction, Okada put together a team he described as a "practically shapeless entity that moves like an amoeba," and the Japanese side made it to the last 16 for the first time in team history.
But valuing the autonomy of individual players is easier said than done. And even if it is done, there is no guarantee that it will work.
