How to Cut Back Wisteria
- 1). Walk around the wisteria vine and locate all the side shoots. Side shoots are skinny branches growing off the main vine. Trim all the side shoots to 11 inches long with pruning shears. Prune in August or September. Wait until February to prune again.
- 2). Walk around the wisteria vines and locate all the the side shoots, again in the wintertime. Cut down these side shoots so they're 4 inches long.
- 3). Examine the length of the main vine. If the wisteria grows out of control, or gets too long or infringes on an area, cut it back to the desired length with your pruning shears. Perform this task once a year.
