How to Train to Do Electronic Bankruptcy Filing

    • 1). Receive admission to practice in your bankruptcy district. Each state has two or more district courts that require an attorney to be admitted to practice. Since bankruptcy law is federal law, an attorney must apply to practice in the federal court system for that state. This can be done by submitting an application with the applicable district.

    • 2). Sign up for the Electronic Filing System for your district. When you are admitted to practice in your district, you are usually required to also sign up for the ECF bankruptcy filing system in your state. This requires you to have a valid email address and computer that can handle the basic software requirements for the ECF system.

    • 3). Participate in ECF training sessions. Most districts offer and require ECF training sessions for all newly admitted attorneys to that district. These courses are offered online and sometimes in person for your district. If you've previously used ECF in another district court system, you may be able to waive ECF training on a Motion to the court.

    • 4). Complete the training modules required by your district. The modules required by your district will take up to a day to complete, depending on your district's requirements. Once they have been completed, you will begin receiving electronic notifications of proceedings instead of standard mailings from the bankruptcy court. You will also be able to file bankruptcy cases via Electronic Court Filing.
