It is important for all people to do some sort of physical activity on a regular basis.
Exercise helps to control your weight and keeps your body feeling healthy.
Those with diabetes are advised to start and maintain a regular exercise program.
Physical activity in diabetics can help to control blood sugar levels, lower their risk of heart disease, help avoid problems with blood flow, lower bad cholesterol, raise good cholesterol, and again, keep weight at a more healthy and ideal level.
Though most diabetes patients are advised to exercise by physicians, they should still consult their doctor about what kind of exercise is best and will be the most effective for them individually.
You should let your doctor know what type of exercise you plan on pursuing and see if this is best for you.
The doctor will also let you know when you should exercise and for how long.
If you have been exercising for a good amount of time then you can probably be active for 30 minutes to an hour, but those that are just starting out will need to gradually work their way up to a higher intensity.
Checking the level of your blood glucose before and after you exercise is a good idea.
If the blood sugar is to low or too high then you should wait to exercise.
If you do end up exercising and hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) takes place then you must make sure to eat a small snack or take a glucose tablet and stop exercising immediately.
Hypoglycemia can cause you to feel a change in your heartbeat, feel weak and shaky, sweat more than normal, get a headache, or possibly even lose consciousness.
Many diabetes patients have issues when it comes to their lower limbs.
Legs and feet could develop sores or other types of infections if they are not monitored and taken care of properly.
Before starting to workout diabetics should check their feet to make sure that there aren't any blisters or sores, as well as following this same precaution afterwards.
Wearing the proper shoes and socks, such as cotton socks and athletic sneakers, that fit properly and are comfortable can help to prevent sores, blisters, infections, or other injuries.
When doing physical activity there are also a variety of other things that diabetics should keep I mind.
Before starting to exercise you most warm up and after exercising you must cool down.
Warming up and cooling down, in addition to stretching can help to prevent injury.
Making sure that you hydrate yourself is also a must.
Water should be consumed prior to exercising, throughout a workout, and after its completion.
Also, participating in physical activities that you like will help the time go by faster and will keep you interested.
Exercising when you have diabetes can help to keep the disease under control.
Physical activity can help to control your weight, improve the level of your blood sugar, improve your heart health, and keep you feeling healthy and happy.
