The only difference is that diabetics have to maintain a healthy diet, while it is choice for everyone else.
Probably the most important nutrient to monitor in your diet is carbohydrates.
There are two types of carbohydrates: simple and complex.
The simple carbohydrates are sugar.
Complex carbohydrates are beans, nuts, vegetables and whole grains.
The consumption of complex carbohydrates are healthier than simple carbohydrates.
Counting carbohydrates will allow you to eat as you want each day rather than have a scheduled meal plan.
Consult with a dietitian to calculate the amount of carbohydrates you need every day which will be based on your blood sugar levels and weight and activity level.

The second part of a healthy diet is fiber which helps food move in the GI tract and delays sugar absorption, helps reduce cholesterol, prevents constipation and promotes weight loss.

To achieve a lower fat diet consume fish, poultry and lean red meat instead.
Cooking your food plays a role is reducing fat by choosing grilled, baked and roasted rather than fried food.
Increase your consumption of fruits and vegetables to lower the fat your diet rather than baked goods.
Take the foods that you already enjoy and apply the basics for eating healthy to create a healthy and enjoyable diet.
