Moratorium on Wind Turbines

Opponents of wind energy farms would like to see a moratorium put on the Consumers Energy wind farm project.
This resolution was not passed because one of the reasons is that three of the five members of the board have an agreement with Consumers Energy for easements to use the land that they own.
Supervisor Kathleen Anderson that they would put it up to a vote but explained to the audience that the three would have to abstain from voting and that would null a quorum vote and would make the voting useless.
Wind farm opponent Cary Shaineldecker of Riverton Township voiced concerns about health, safety, and welfare of the people living near the turbines.
He also states that he thinks the wind farms will drive down the value of the property in the area of the wind farms.
Dee Bennett said that Riverton Township will never be the same if wind turbines are built there.
Mark Varenhorst worries about health issues and might have to leave his home if there are bad effects on his health and well fare.
He said he is scared and have large concerns about the wind farms.
The board passed a resolution in June 2010 opposing wind turbines in Lake Michigan.
Township Clerk Rita Johnson indicated that this was a county matter that deals with zoning and would be up to the county.
According to Erik Jeffries one hundred or more people have signed a petition calling for a moratorium in order to gain more time to study what effects the wind turbines will have on the surrounding area and the people that live there.
Jack Lynch, a real estate person that is licensed, said the more money that a person, such as a person that has a lease with Consumers Energy, will be bothered much less than a person that will gain no monetary value from the wind turbines.
He also said that the wind turbines will effect the smaller land owner more than the farmer with large tracts of land.
Dennis Marvin, Consumers Energy New Generation Communications director would like the issue to be discussed at the county level because it is a zoning matter.
Marvin indicated that Riverton Township was chosen because of the zoning ordinance that is in place, the wind possibilities in the area, and the proximity to the transmission lines at the nearby hydroelectric plant.
Consumers Energy figures that the Lake Winds Energy Park will infuse about thirty three million dollars into the area with the construction and longtime upkeep and maintenance of the wind turbines.
Even with this large amount of money involved it is probably the best idea to put a moratorium on the wind farm project until a safe and equitable solution is achieved.
