Efficient Compost Containers

A compost container is an efficient way or method of making compost and you or I making compost will result in fewer bags of lawn waste and fewer bags of garbage finding their way into the landfills of today.
Many different types of composting containers are being used daily.
Containers allow for the control of the four factors which affect the speed of decay within themselves.
These four factors are: oxygen, water, food, and temperature.
By managing these four factors, the naturally slow process of decay can progress faster.
To work well the compost container needs to be moist and needs to have air circulation.
The temperature inside the container should also be between 32 to 60 degrees Celsius.
To maintain the necessary spread of temperature points the pile of composting material needs to maintain working size of 1 meter by 1 meter by 1 meter or larger.
The carbon rich material which is best known as "brown stuff" and the nitrogen rich material is known as "green stuff".
There needs to be a balance of these two materials so as to form good quality compost.
Healthy backyard compost usually contains a balance of 1/4 green stuff such as; vegetable scraps, coffee grounds, grass clippings or manure to 3/4 brown stuff such as; leaves, straw, shredded paper, coir fiber, wood pellets or sawdust.
In other words 1/4 green matter to 3/4 brown matter.
During the home composting, micro-organisms from the soil eat the organic waste and break it down into its simplest parts.
This produces fiber-rich carbon containing humus with inorganic nutrients like nitrogen, phosphorous and potassium.
The micro-organisms break the material down through aerobic respiration.
Through the respiration process, the micro-organisms give off carbon dioxide and heat.
The more heat generated the faster the decomposition occurs.
During this process, the contents needs to be mixed or stirred weekly.
Your home composting container now contains a soil conditioner, mulch and fertilizer all wrapped into one.
It benefits the environment as a natural fertilizer for gardening and farming.
In other words using a compost container to compost your waster from your lawn and possibly your kitchen is beneficial for you and your environment in the following ways: a) Making your own compost is great for your wallet and your garden b) Reusing our own waste is a great way to recycle c) Yard waste often counts for more than 25% of trash collected while food scraps are often as much as 10% of the rubbish located in our landfills today.
