How to Make a Lavender Eye Mask
- 1). Cut cotton, flannel, silk or fleece fabric into two 3-1/2 inch by 10-1/2 inch rectangles. You may also cut the fabric into shapes to better cover your eyes -- make sure to cut through two layers of material at the same time to ensure you get two matching pieces. Guide your cuts by drawing cutting lines onto the material with fabric pencils, which make washable marks on the fabric.
- 2). Align the pieces of fabric with printed sides touching. Pin the two pieces of material together with straight stick pins or safety pins.
- 3). Sew a 1/4-inch seam along all the longest top and bottom edges of the fabric rectangles. Sew a 1/4-inch seam along the two short side edges of the rectangles -- but only sew halfway up, leaving two gaps at the top measuring approximately 1-1/2 inches long.
- 4). Remove all safety or stickpins and slide your pointer finger through one of the holes, bunch the material as needed and push your finger through the other hole. Hook your finger on the material surrounding the second hole and pull the material through the first hole, turning the fabric printed-side-out.
- 5). Crush dried lavender leaves and pour them into one of the side holes of the eye mask, as you pinch the other hole closed. Fill the bottom-half of the eye mask with the lavender leaves.
- 6). Cut a piece of cloth-covered elastic to measure half the circumference of the wearer's head. This ensures that, once attached, the elastic will be comfortably snug, to prevent the mask from slipping off.
- 7). Insert one end of the elastic band into one of the gaps. Place approximately 1/2 inch of the band inside the eye mask and secure into place with a pin. Tuck the ends of the material in and sew a 1/4-inch seam along the gap to secure the elastic and eliminate the hole.
- 8). Pull the other end of the elastic over and repeat the previous step to secure the band in place. Try the mask on -- if it is too tight, remove the most recent seams and cut a new band. If it is too loose, remove the seams and shorten the band.
