How to Report Unemployment Insurance Fraud
- 1). Determine that fraud has been committed. Examples of unemployment insurance fraud include filing claims using a name or Social Security number other than your own, submitting payment requests for an incarcerated inmate, lying about the amount of income earned while receiving benefits, reporting fake job searches and collecting unemployment while physically unable to work.
- 2). Gather any known information regarding the claimant committing fraud, such as full name, address, phone number, Social Security number, current employer, previous employer and a description of the fraud. Providing as much information as possible enables the state to conduct the investigation quickly and thoroughly.
- 3). Access the website for the agency that regulates unemployment in your state by following the link in the Resources section and clicking on the applicable state. Once on the state agency's website, utilize the search function to find contact information, procedures and forms to report unemployment insurance fraud.
- 4). Complete the form provided with any requested information available. Submit the form online or print a hard copy to send via fax or mail. A toll-free hot line also is available specifically for reporting fraud.
