    Prehistoric Morgan County

    • Morgan County was an area traveled through by various nomadic tribes, according to archaeological evidence. When the first European explorers arrived, the Arapaho, Pawnee and Cheyenne had made the area their home.

    Explorers

    • The first explorer to visit the area known as Morgan County was Pedro de Villasur in 1720. Both France and Spain claimed this area but it became part of the Louisiana Purchase in 1803. Gold seekers came in 1858, and immigrants came in 1886 looking for a place to settle.

    Geography

    • Morgan County became a county on February 19, 1889. It took its name from Fort Morgan, which became the county seat. Towns included within the new county were Brush, Wiggins, Snyder, Hillrose, Log Lane Village and Weldona.
