- 1). Divide mathematical concepts into categories for your game. Use different colored index cards for the categories. Categories can include subjects like algebra and geometry, formulas like quadratic equations, and famous figures like Fibonacci and Archimedes.
- 2). Write the question or equation to be solved on the back of the card and put the cards into piles based on the categories. Make more than enough cards so that you will be able to play the game without students memorizing the answers.
- 3). Utilize the cards in classroom games. The category system is useful for playing versions of math Jeopardy, in which students divide into two teams, or other trivia games. Use a bell or buzzer so that teams can ring in with the answer; healthy competition will encourage students to participate and will help them learn.
- 4). Use the questions on the cards in other games; have students race to solve the equations on the chalkboard or whiteboard. You can play Mathopoly or games that involve strategy.
