How to Become a Speech Language Pathologist in Ohio
- 1). Complete graduate coursework and graduate clinical practicum at an institution accredited by the Council on Academic Accreditation in Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology (CAA). A program director must validate that the program satisfied the skills and requirements necessary for certification (see Resources below).
- 2). Qualify for certification. To qualify for certification, you must earn a master’s or doctoral degree and have completed the minimum 75 academic credit hours needed to satisfy an area of study that address the skills and requirements related to the field of speech-language pathology. (36 of the 75 credit hours must be earned at the graduate level.)
- 3). Demonstrate a working knowledge of the field of speech pathology. According the CAA, “Applicant must demonstrate knowledge of the nature of speech, language, hearing and communication disorders, and swallowing disorders, including the etiologies, characteristics, anatomical/physiological, acoustic, psychological, developmental and linguistic and cultural correlates.”
- 4). Undergo training in the area of ethical conduct. You must meet the requirements and be able to demonstrate a working knowledge of ASHA Code of Ethics. Complete all necessary course work, workshop and clinical hours as well as independent projects necessary to prove that all ASHA Code of Ethics standards can and will be enforced.
- 5). Obtain licensure. Pay the associated fees and enter all forms needed to begin the application process. You will need to pay $210 to receive a Conditional License and then full license at the end of a Supervised Professional Experience (SPE) year. You will receive full licensure at the successful completion of that year.
- 6). Begin your job search. Complete a resume and cover letter and then apply for work as a Speech Language Pathologist.
