How to Keep Up With Your Industry While Job Hunting
- 1). Read trade magazines and websites. If you have a personal subscription to a trade magazine you are encouraged to keep it. Most libraries do not carry too many trade publications. If you are lucky enough to have a library that does have your trade magazine, take advantage of it. Of course, following trade magazines on the Web will give you timely information. These are useful to keep abreast of because you never know when they may come in handy-say, in an interview. You can always use news as a conversation point.
- 2). Keep in contact with those still in the business. Not only can keeping in contact with those in your industry help you find that new job, but they can keep you aware of the changes and updates in your arena. Cultivate as many "ins" as possible and stay tight even after you get a new gig. Attend networking events to expand your social/professional circle.
- 3). Use social media. Get involved with social networking websites and online chats, which will keep you informed and involved. You may even be able to contribute toward solutions to problems. Keeping involved with online avenues allows you to voice your ideas and concerns. Likewise, you could create powerful connections with others.
- 4). Observe, if possible. This may not be possible for most people, but some may be able to sit in a working environment specific to their trade every once in a while. This can give you a firsthand look at what is going on in your industry.
- 5). Keep learning. Attend a seminar or take a course in your arena. Many people want to do this while working-but never seem to find the time-so it may be an opportune time to take advantage of continuing education. This also helps fill in a career gap on your resume and makes a wonderful talking point during an interview.
