Food to Eat When You Have a Stomach Virus
- Kiss
Stomach viruses are highly contagious and can be spread through sharing food or utensils, kissing or even shaking hands. Essentially you swallow a virus that inflames the lining of the stomach and intestines, causing food to move quickly through the GI (gastrointestinal) tract.
The two most important things you can do to prevent stomach viruses are wash your hands frequently and don't share foods. - Sipping Water
The CDC (Centers for Disease Control) recommends staying well hydrated and resting while your body fights the virus. Fluids are your best friends while a stomach virus runs its course. For the first two hours do not ingest anything. After that you may begin sipping water, flat ginger ale, or a mixture of half water and half grape or apple juice. If you cannot keep down these fluids, are not pregnant and do not suffer from any chronic illness, you may take an over-the-counter anti-nausea medication. Once you are able to tolerate these beverages, begin adding soda crackers, gelatin or broth. Do not take aspirin or anti-inflammatory medications while fighting a stomach virus.
After 24 to 48 hours, begin introducing solid, bland foods, such as the BRAT diet, or bananas, applesauce, rice and toast. Noodles and eggs work well too. - Visit Your Doctor
If you experience bloody diarrhea or dehydration, or if your symptoms continue for more than three days, see your health-care provider. These are potentially serious conditions. Symptoms of dehydration include reduced or darkened urine, thirst, weakness, lethargy and dizziness.
