Northern Illinois' Kane County Division of Transportation scheduled several construction projects on various county roads throughout 2010. Many of these projects involved routine work, such as asphalt resurfacing, crack sealing or repainting markers. Others were more extensive, requiring detours and road closures. - A major project across Kane County, the Stearns Road Bridge Corridor involved construction of a new bridge and a road realignment along a 4.6-mile segment extending from the Kane/DuPage County line west to Randall Road. The project also included widening and resurfacing a segment of IL Route 25 from the Chicago Central and Pacific Railroad to the Brewster Creek Bridge. Construction began in 2009 and is expected to be completed in late 2010. Eighty-five percent was done as of the end of October 2010. The forecasted cost estimate for the project is $165 million.
- In addition to the bridge replaced as part of the Stearns Road Bridge Corridor project, two other bridges were replaced in Kane County during the 2010 construction season. The bridge over Tyler Creek on Damisch Road was reconstructed beginning in July, and the Welch Creek Bridge on Keslinger Road was replaced starting in March.
- Construction of new bike paths took place in 2010, although only one project affected traffic on Kane County Roads. McLean Boulevard between Spring Street and Bowers Road was closed daily for a new path starting in April. Kane County received funding for these projects from the Illinois Transportation Enhancement Program, or ITEP, which aims to improve the quality of life in Illinois through alternative transportation, including bike paths and walking trails.
