  When installing a three-way dimmer switch, determine the appropriate size for the lighting fixture. This is done by figuring the maximum wattage rating for the lighting fixture. Most common ceiling fans have four lights, each of which can hold a 100-watt light bulb. This would mean that you need a dimmer switch that could handle 400 watts. This is figured by taking 4 bulbs by the 100 watts. If you do not know the maximum wattage for your light fixture, the manufacturer normally has a label on the light. Find that to see the proper wattage. It is not uncommon that individuals use the wrong bulbs. This is a fire hazard, so ensure you have the proper wattage before buying the dimmer switch.
