'Raanjhanaa' is a story of Kundan (Dhanush), a Hindu boy, who falls in love with Zoya (Sonam Kapoor) when he is a young 13 year old boy. Set in Benaras, 'Raanjhanaa' is the journey of Kundan's unconditional love for Zoya. Zoya is the first and last love of Kundan's life, but the twist in the tale happens when Zoya leaves Benaras and goes to Delhi for further education.
With time, Zoya forgets about Kundan, who is still waiting for her to come back. Kundan shyly smiles when he thinks about Zoya, who had never taken him seriously when she was in Benaras. Kundan's wait for Zoya comes to an end and Zoya returns back to Benaras, but she is not alone, she comes with her college mate Akram (Abhay Deol), whom she is in love with.
Kundan's life takes a harsh turn on witnessing this and now starts the story of true love, betrayal and redemption. This love triangle is not like the others we have earlier seen, it is different. Zoya asks Kundan to help him get married to Akram and yes like a true lover, Kundan readily accepts to help Zoya, just because he loved her dearly. Kundan's unadulterated love will surely touch your heart.
But who wins Zoya and how, is why you need to watch the movie.
Raanjhanaa Director Aanand L Rai has struck the right chord with the audiences by using all Indian destinations. The dil se desi audience will surely welcome this change in cinema of a love story sans exotic foreign locations. The movie begins in Benaras, showcases some parts of Punjab and ends in Delhi.
Dhanush in Raanjhanaa
Coming to performances, Dhanush who makes his Bollywood debut is outstanding as Kundan. He is simple, innocent and will win hearts of all who watch the movie. The superstar of south is surely here to stay. He leaves a mark with his acting, which looks so natural and effortless. Dhanush surely deserves a special mention while it comes to dancing as well.
Sonam Kapoor as Zoya is in one of her best characters till date. As a school girl we see a simple and sweet Sonam while in the second half we see a completely different, confident and strong, Sonam Kapoor. Like her Delhi 6 character Zoya has been devoid of make-up, and this is what makes her character more real and appealing. Abhay Deol as Akram is not utilized to the fullest, but he does his small part efficiently, as expected.
Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub as Dhanush's friend is remarkable, so is Swara Bhaskar. All the other supporting cast including Kumud Misra, Vipin Sharma are all first class.
Verdict
Along with superb performances, some unavoidable sweet romance and some sugarcoated feet tapping music, Raanjhanaa is worth a watch.
