What Is Tree Pollen?
- Pollen particles are small, dry, light and easily spread by wind. Trees are the dominant pollen producers in the spring. Insects and the wind transfer the pollen.
- Tree pollen is an allergen that can aggravate allergies even if the trees are not on or near your property. Tree pollen can travel hundreds of miles away from its source.
- Of the more than 50,000 type of trees, less than 100 produce pollen that causes allergic reactions. Those include elm, hickory, walnut, pecan, catalpa and sycamore.
- Certain trees can be purchased for the yard that do not produce pollen that aggravates allergies. These trees are dogwood, crape myrtle, fig, pear and plum.
- Female cultivars of particular trees will not affect allergies. These include willow trees, red and silver maple, poplar, date palm and ash.
