How to Write A Check Out Safely
- 1). Put the date of the check on the date line. Spell out the month to fill up the entire line. This will prevent unscrupulous people from changing the check's date.
- 2). Write the name of the payee in large, clear letters on the "Pay to the Order of" line. If there is blank space at the end of the payee's name, draw a line extending from the end of the name to the vertical line before the amount box.
- 3). Write the amount of the check (in numerals) in the amount box. Start at the very beginning of the box and add a line at the end of the amount to fill in any blank space in the box. If you leave extra space, someone may try to add numbers to the amount.
- 4). Spell out the amount of the check on the line under the payee's name. Write out each number and fill in all the gaps. If there is space at the end of the amount, fill it in by drawing another line.
- 5). Record the purpose of the check on the memo line in the bottom left-hand corner. Use this space to enter your account number if you are paying a bill.
- 6). Sign your name on the signature line. The check is worthless without your signature.
