Information on Colleges in Georgia
- Georgia is home to 10 historically black colleges and universities. These schools originated at a time when schools in the South were segregated. Now, these colleges are open to everyone, but still have a majority of African-American students. Morehouse College, the alma mater of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., is an all-male school closely situated to the all-female Spelman College. Also located in Georgia are Clark Atlanta University, Albany State University, Fort Valley State College, Interdenominational Theological Center, Morris Brown College, Paine College, and Savannah State University.
- Whether you want to be a massage therapist, hair stylist, or auto mechanic you can find a technical school in Georgia to train you. In Augusta, Georgia, there is the Augusta School of Massage as well as the Augusta Technical College. In Forest Park Georgia, there is the Beauty College of America. In Duluth, you can even find the Aviation Institute of Maintenance-Atlanta. The Georgia Institute of Cosmetology has five locations in Georgia where students can pursue a Master Cosmetology program or an Instructor of Cosmetology full-time or part-time. With three campuses in Georgia, Augusta Technical College offers programs of study including dental and medical assisting, computer programming, golf course management and paralegal studies.
- These schools have two-year campuses: South Georgia College; Georgia Perimeter College; Coastal Georgia College; and Darton College. Georgia Perimeter College has programs for both traditional students as well as nontraditional students. You can also find non-degree programs at community colleges if you don't want to take the time or financial investment in a four-year program.
- The South has a strong tradition in religion. Some of the seminaries you can attend in Georgia are Luther Rice Seminary; James and Carolyn McAfee School of Theology; Morehouse School of Religion; and Columbia Theological Seminary. Located in Decatur, Georgia, the Columbia Theological Seminary is a Presbyterian theological school offering courses such as Theology and Personality, Reading Freud in a Postmodern Time and Sex, Celibacy and Siblings.
- The University of Georgia; Georgia Institute of Technology; Emory University; Georgia State University; Georgia Southern University; Mercer; Oglethorpe; and Wesleyan College are some of Georgia's four-year colleges and universities. Wesleyan College in Macon, Georgia, was the first all female college in Georgia. In the 2010-2011 academic year, a little more than 600 students attend the school with 39 percent being minorities and an additional 22 percent from outside the United States. The University of Georgia offers 22 baccalaureate degrees, 34 master's degrees as well as professional degrees in law, pharmacy and veterinary medicine.
