    • 1). Open all the doors and windows during the cleaning process. Since cleaning will stir up old smoke odors, you'll want the fresh air. You'll also be using a lot of chemicals, so open windows will help air out the cabin.

    • 2). Wash all fabrics in your log cabin. Remove curtains, wall hangings, table runners, quilts, linens and seat covers and machine wash them with laundry detergent or have them dry-cleaned. Rewash any laundry in the drawers and closets as well because these will have absorbed the smoke smell from the house.

    • 3). Move furniture away from the walls and thoroughly wipe down the walls, ceilings, trim and hard-wood floors with the cleaner you would normally use for each surface. If the interior of your cabin is primarily wood, wipe down it down with Murphy's Oil Soap and soft cloths. Smoke affects every inch of the surfaces in your cabin, so don't take shortcuts when you're cleaning them.

    • 4). Spray all windows and mirrors with a 1-to-4 vinegar/water solution mixed in a spray bottle and wipe with a soft cloth. For more severe smoke residue, use a stronger solution or undiluted vinegar. Then rewash the windows with standard glass cleaner to remove streaks.

    • 5). Wipe down wood furniture with the vinegar/water solution and soft cloths. If the smell remains, add two squirts of dish soap to 1/4 cup of witch hazel and lightly scrub the surface with very soft steel wool. Remove any residue with a damp cloth.

    • 6). Sprinkle baking soda on all mattresses, couch cushions and carpets. After several hours, vacuum up the baking soda.

    • 7). Turn off the lights and unscrew all light bulbs and wipe them with a damp paper towel. Once the light bulbs are dry, screw them back into the sockets.

    • 8). Leave open containers of white vinegar throughout your cabin for a couple days. While the vinegar smell might be strong, it will help clear the smell of cigarette smoke.

    • 9). Place charcoal or ground coffee in open containers inside drawers, shelves and other small areas. Leave them in place for at least a week.

Rent a steam cleaner or have your carpet professionally cleaned. While this may not be the cheapest route, it's one of the only ways to remove cigarette smoke once it has penetrated the carpet and absorbed into the padding.

Call a professional. If the previous steps still weren't enough to remove the smoke, have a professional fog your cabin with wet foggers or thermal foggers. Some companies can also clean with ozone generators. In both cases, the gas from these cleaners will spread throughout the house, following the path of the smoke and neutralizing odor. Since fogging and ozone products can be harmful to pets and humans, they should be handled only by professionals.
