Elizabeth Samet, a civilian professor, teaches English at West Point.
She began teaching there in 1997.
The author really noticed a big change at West Point after the September 11, 2001 attack on the United States.
She observed many changes in both the students and the curriculum.
The book covers many of the experiences Elizabeth had with the students in the classroom and on campus.
The professor knew that many of her students would be sent off to war as lieutenants.
She was amazed at the attitudes of the students as to how upbeat they would remain knowing what their future held.
The best part, probably for any teacher, is the fact that many of her students would write to her from the war zone and keep her up-to-date as to what they were reading.
Nothing could mean more to a teacher than to get this kind of feedback from former students especially when they were in a far off place serving their country.
This was a feeling of great accomplishment.
This is a heart warming book that is an excellent read.
This book will make you respect, even more, the young people who are serving our country and the teachers who guide them through their academic years.
The part of the book I liked the best is when the author told of her many experiences in the classroom and on the campus.
You can just feel her passion for teaching.
I enjoyed this book and had a hard time putting it down.
