Owning a ferret is a bit different from owning other types of pets and there are often mistakes that new ferret owner's can make.
This is one of the reasons that it is so important for a potential ferret owner to research the ups and downs of ferret ownership.
One mistake that ferret owners make is thinking that just because their ferret trembles or shakes a little that he is too cold.
This is actually quite common for ferrets and it is also common for the owners to try and warm them up, which is unnecessary.
Ferrets can shake a little because they are excited, anticipating something, or just out of pleasure.
They do not shiver from being cold or from being frightened.
Sometimes they will also shake a bit when you pick them up but if you allow them time to get some exercise the shaking will usually cease.
Another common mistake that ferret owners make is not having a true understanding of how hyper and excited a ferret can get.
When these furry little creatures are released from their cage it may appear that they have gone crazy.
They will jump into the air, twist about, crash into things, and run frantically about the house.
When you might reach down to pick your ferret up and calm him down he just might hiss at you and arch his backside similar to an angry cat.
In fact the ferret is not angry at all, he is just excited to be roaming free.
Ferrets not only run into things because they are excited but keep in mind that ferrets also have poor vision and so this should be expected since they are also more than a little hyper.
If your ferret is running around odds are that he is feeling fine and doing quite well.
Another mistake that has a bit of humor to it is when ferret owners panic because they see their ferret dragging their rear end.
Most owners assume this is a medical issue and that something must be wrong with their ferret.
Some fear that the pet needs medical attention and they rush him to the vet.
If the truth be told...
your ferret is simply wiping his butt on your floor! Ferrets like to keep themselves clean so in order to uncomplicated this problem it is best to keep the litter box on a floor that can be washed up.
Ferret owners should know that ferrets sleep very soundly, so much in fact that owners might stand over them for a minute thinking they may have died or are in a coma.
Oddly enough, if you pick up a soundly sleeping ferret he still will not wake but will rather just lay there paying you little or no attention.
While these are not big mistakes and can actually be mistakes that you will look back on later and laugh about, at the time they can be frustrating.
Many of these can be avoided entirely if you have done your homework about ferrets before you bring one home.
