How to Spot Leaf Flowers

    • 1). Keep a calendar for your flowers, so you know when to expect blooming. Almost all flowers bloom in spring to summer, but different varieties cover different ranges of time. Daffodils, tulips, calla lilies and crocuses begin blooming in early spring and continue through June. Roses and standard lilies start in June and may continue through the summer, depending on the cultivator. Perennials like begonias and petunias start blooming in early summer and continue until fall.

    • 2). Look for flower buds on bulb plants like daffodils, calla lilies, tulips and crocuses first, per the blooming schedule. These flower buds each get their own growing stem, but start as rolled green extensions, rather than rounded bulbs, so it's difficult to tell a flower from a leaf. Once the roll begin to loosen, gently turn the tip of one back to discover whether the inside is a petal or a leaf.

    • 3). Look for flower buds on perennials and roses later in the season. These plants produce more standard buds, so they'll be easier to spot. Buds will be small, firm and slightly rounded, with a spray of small leaves below. Buds may get their own stem or grow several to a stem, but always appear as small rounded growths. The buds will open per their individual blooming times.
