Airports are where different machinery that use flight as a mode of travel take off and land.
The different machinery looked at are aircraft of all kinds, fixed wing planes, helicopters, even blimps which are large balloon type flight crafts.
Airports have what is called a runway, which is a hardened surface specifically designed for the fixed winged aircraft, or planes, to take off and also land on.
There is also the helipad which is designed for a helicopter to lift off and return to land on.
If sea planes are being used then there is usually a clear stretch of water that these planes can take off or come in and safely land on.
These planes are equipped with floats attached to where the wheels are normally situated.
These floats keep the plane buoyant in the water and stop it from sinking.
In larger airports there may be ramps and docks.
They also have hangers, this is the place where planes are kept, stored and maintenance is done to ensure they are in working order.
There is the terminal building, which is the area where passengers receive their travel tickets or have them checked before being able to board any aircraft.
This is also where luggage is processed and organised for loading onto and off planes.
There may be kiosks, where people can get snacks while waiting to depart, as well as rest rooms and a lounge area for passengers to wait for their flights.
Then there is the control tower, this is the area which controls the landing and taking off of all planes.
Without this sort of facility there would be absolute confusion and disasters of all sorts.
It is manned by people who have direct contact with each aircraft via a radio link and other methods.
A pilot must make contact with the tower before landing or taking off.
International airports usually have a customs section for passengers arriving from overseas where luggage is checked for prohibited goods.
There are many airport of all sizes around the world, all designed for the safe arrival and departure of aircraft.
