Travel preparation tips for regular or last-minute travellers

105 19
There are many reasons for regular or last-minute travel, it can be snapping up a late bargain for a weekend break, regular trips to visit family or friends, or maybe business travel.

While regular travelling can be fun, it can often seem like an inconvenience when you take the organising and packing in to account. Planning is essential and it's helpful to have a regular, fool-proof routine in place to save time organising your travel arrangements.

Whatever your reason for regular or last-minute travel, the following tips will help save you time and hassle.

Travel bag / suitcase
Have a sturdy travel bag at the ready. Keep one specifically for flying and store it an easily accessible place.

Travel with hand luggage only
Travelling with hand luggage only saves so much time on both the outbound and inbound flights - you avoid the queues to deposit your luggage and you won't have to wait for an eternity by the luggage carousel to retrieve your suitcase.

Toiletries bag
Keep a separate toiletries bag, effectively a duplicate set of toiletries, with all the items you need for travelling. Keep them specifically for travelling and resist using any of these as this bag will contain everything you need and can be thrown into your suitcase at a moment's notice. Keep an eye on the levels to avoid running out and top up as necessary. Watch out for expiry dates too.

Packing list
Next time you pack, write a list of everything that goes in your bag and keep the list of items for future use, this will become your regular check list when packing.

Contact numbers
Keep a list of contact numbers in your travel bag - useful information and services, such as hotels, taxi companies, car hire, and airport parking companies. You'll never waste time again searching for a telephone number. Keep a list of your favourite websites to book your regular travel services is also useful.

Annual travel insurance
For regular travellers, a year-long travel insurance policy works out cheaper. It will also save you panicking at the last minute trying to find a cheap deal.

Passport
The renewal date of my passport is etched in my brain, make sure you know when your passport is due for renewal and make sure you apply for your new passport with sufficient time before your next trip.

Register for flight alerts
By registering for flight alerts you can stay up-to-date on the status of your flight - you'll be alerted to any delay or cancellation which could save you precious time.

Travel documents
Keep a document wallet containing all your important travel documents in: your passport, booking confirmation, tickets, a copy of your travel insurance, etc. with your travel bag. This way there'll be no searching for anything, it will all be in one place.

Use the above travel tips to help you set up your own personalised travel routine so that your last-minute or regular travelling will become a little easier. You may find you need to add to or adapt your routine to suit your travel, but as with anything it helps to be prepared - Happy travelling!
