Ways to Get Out of a Speeding Ticket

    Take the Deal

    • When you are pulled over, never tell the office how fast you were going, even if you know. Don't admit that were speeding because it will make it that much harder to fight the ticket. Be polite to the officer, as he may be more reluctant to give a speeding ticket to someone who is understanding.

However, if you know that you were going 10 or 15 miles over the speed limit and the officer has only written you for 5 miles over, it is best to just take the ticket. This type of speeding ticket will not result in additional points being placed on your license, and it will keep your premium from increasing. Also, if you take it to court, chances are the charge will not be dropped. In fact, it may increase if the officer explains how he lowered the charge.

    Note the Situation

    • Note how the officer you pulled over. Did he clock you when they were driving or standing still? If he was driving, you may be able to fight the ticket because the radar gun often gives an inaccurate speed when both cars are moving. Also, see if there is heavy traffic nearby. Another car could have been going the same speed or faster. If possible, take a picture of the heavy traffic with your cell phone camera. If there is any doubt that the radar gun picked up a different car, your ticket probably will be dropped.

    Radar Information

    • Ask the officer for the model and serial number of the radar gun used. These guns must constantly be checked and maintained to make sure they are completely accurate. Once you have the information, go to the police station and ask for records regarding that specific radar gun. These are public domain. If the gun hasn't been checked or gone through maintenance in the last few months, you may have a case about the gun being defective. If the traffic was light, and you were obviously speeding, this may be your best bet to work your way out of a ticket.
