How to do Furrow Planting

    • 1). Prepare your garden for the planting by removing large stones and rocks, weeds and other obstacles. Decide where you want to make furrows and how big an area you will need for this gardening system.

    • 2). Mark the area for the furrows with four wood stakes in four corners. Then place stakes along both short sides of the chosen area to mark the beginnings and the ends of individual furrows. How far apart each furrow will be would depend on the plant that you are planting.

    • 3). Stretch pieces of string between the wooden stakes to make a guideline for each of the furrows. Create at least four rows for the best fertilization. Also note when planning that more short furrows near one another are a better option than fewer long ones.

    • 4). Dig narrow trenches for the furrows with a spade tool or a hoe. Follow the strings as guidelines, digging right next to them, on one side. Make sure that the depth of the furrow is around 2 inches.

    • 5). Sprinkle the seeds at the bottom of the furrows. Note that they need to be 1 to 3 inches apart, otherwise you will have to do hand thinning once the plants start growing. You can even space the seeds up to 8 to 10 inches apart. The seeds should be dry and healthy, so be sure to choose only quality seeds from a well-known, respectable source.

    • 6). Cover the seeds with excess soil from the top of the nearby ridges with a hoe. Put only a light layer of soil on the seeds, about 1 to 1 1/2 inches. Press the soil onto the seeds to allow the seed to have good contact with the soil, which is essential for proper germination.

    • 7). Water the garden with a garden hose until all the rows of furrows are moist.
