Almost no matter your current state of health, you can control your blood glucose and roll back many of the effects of diabetes and high blood sugar levels.
Diabetes research is progressing rapidly.
There's no reason for you not to lead a healthy life.
Start by keeping a blood glucose diary.
Here are a few cutting edge tips to note in your diary that can help with early detection and keep blood glucose in the normal range.
Find problems quickly and you can often prevent or reverse damage to your body.
Measure your mood.
While learning to cope with and be in command of diabetes can certainly contribute to moodiness, it's important to recognize when extreme moods might be connected to extreme blood sugar levels.
Blood glucose that's either too high or too low can indicate a need for a change in treatment.
The best way to determine if an emotional period is influenced by sugar or other factors is to keep a consistent log.
If you have a sudden change of mood, make a note of it.
If the mood swings become persistent or frequent it may be time to consult your medical doctor.
An accurate record will help the physician make any necessary adjustments to your plan.
Make notes about vision changes.
After your kidneys, your eyes are the second biggest organ of the body affected by uncontrolled blood glucose.
But blindness is no longer an inevitable correlate of diabetes.
Here's what you need to do to keep your eyes in good shape.
Go to your ophthalmologist or optometrist annually at least.
If you are controlling your blood sugar meticulously, your eyes will remain healthy.
If not, you're most likely to show signs of cataracts (a cloudy or opaque lens that can block your vision), glaucoma (high pressure inside the eye that can damage the nerve), or retinopathy (which has a variety of effects).
The long and short is that you'll need to start controlling your glucose and likely your blood pressure.
Alcohol may worsen eye disease.
Smoking certainly raises blood sugar levels in diabetics.
You can stop or overturn damage if you stop smoking now.
The good news is that detecting and treating diabetic eye problems with laser therapy can lower the development of severe vision loss by an estimated 50 to 60 percent.
