- 1). Plant red-veined prayer plants in a shallow pot with loose soil made with two parts peat, one part loam and one part perlite sand. The soil needs to have good aeration, yet be capable of holding water, because these plants prefer to be wet as much as possible. Red-veins have a shallow root system, so the pot need only be a few inches deep.
- 2). Keep your plants in an area where they will receive a low to moderate amount of light and will not be exposed to direct sunlight. Direct sunlight can scorch the plant and damage it or even kill it. Red-veined prayer plants will grow under artificial lights provided the lights are run on a 12-hour night and day cycle.
- 3). Maintain the temperature between 60 degrees Fahrenheit and 80 degrees Fahrenheit. Any lower or higher could damage the plant; therefore, they are best suited to terrariums and greenhouses. Keep the humidity between 80 percent and 100 percent using frequent misting with a spray bottle.
- 4). Water the plant every day so that the soil does not dry out. The plant is highly tolerant of and even prefers a lot of water. You may water every other day when you begin to see white flowers blooming; this indicates a resting period for the plant.
- 5). Feed the plant fertilizer diluted with one-half water once a week to provide extra nutrients. The brand of fertilizer does not matter as long as you use it according to the instructions on the specific manufacturer's label.
- 6). Prune dead or rotting leaves off the plant. These will become more common as the plant gets older. Pruning allows the plant to allocate energy to newer, healthier leaves.
