  Army nurses are a critical part of the Army health care team. They provide daily care for patients, carrying out the treatment plans of Army doctors. Serving as an Army nurse is a fulfilling experience that is excellent preparation for the civilian health care industry. Each of the Army nursing specialties requires its own skills and training.
  
  

Army Public Health Nurse

• Army Public Health Nurses work on Army bases to inform the local military community about potential health hazards. There offer information about vaccinations and conduct classes on the proper use of medication and good nutrition (Reference 1).
  
  

Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist

• These nurses specialize in providing care to patients who require general anesthesia. They also work with patients who have respiratory and cardiopulmonary problems. Nurse anesthetists are in high demand in the civilian medical field, so a career in this field will yield many benefits after the Army (Reference 2).
  
  

Critical Care Nurse

• Critical care nurses provide services to patients in intensive care. They are trained to collaborate with other nurses and doctors to monitor patients' vital signs and intervene when they indicate trouble (Reference 3).
  
  

Emergency Room Nurse

• Emergency room nurses are the equivalent of ER nurses in the civilian world. These officers work with Army doctors and nurses from other specialties to stabilize emergency patients and transport them to a surgical team or another medical specialist. All Army hospitals have an emergency room nursing staff (Ref 4).
  
  

Family Nurse Practitioner

• Family nurse practitioners provide health care not only to soldiers, but also to their entire families. They collect medical histories and work with families and doctors to develop treatment plans. They also conduct periodic screenings for new health problems (Reference 5).
  
  

Medical-Surgical Nurse

• If you want to have a chance to be in the operating room, helping world-class surgeons, a career as an Army Medical-Surgical Nurse is a good bet. Medical-surgical nurses ensure that the operating room is sterile and properly stocked before operations, and they assist Army doctors during operations (Resource 1).
  
  

OB/GYN Nurse

• OB/GYN nurses work on Army bases and assist female soldiers and dependents with reproductive heath issues. They provide information on birth control and pre-natal care. OB/GYN nurses help administer medical tests and sometimes assist doctors in delivering babies (Resource 2).
  
  

Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner

• While the nursing specialties above deal with physical ailments, the Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner helps soldiers with mental and emotional illness. Psychiatric nurses are often assigned to drug and alcohol rehab clinics, combat stress clinics, and mental health clinics. They also teach classes on mental health issues like suicide prevention (Resource 3).
