The European team wins the Ryder Cup for the first time in 28 years. (See: 1985 Ryder Cup)
Bernhard Langer wins The Masters, becoming the first German to win a major championship. (See: 1985 Masters)
The Bing Crosby National Pro-Am is played for the final time with Bing Crosby's name in the title (the name changes to AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am). Mark O'Meara wins, the first of his five victories in this event.
Nancy Lopez wins five times on the LPGA Tour, including the LPGA Championship. It was her first full season on tour in two years, as she played light schedules in 1983 and 1984 after the birth of a daughter.
Mike Fetchick wins the Senior Tour Hilton Head Seniors International. At age 63, he is the oldest winner on what will later be known as the Champions Tour.
The Slope System is introduced by the USGA as a refinement to the USGA handicapping system.
The double cut at the British Open - one cut after 36 holes, a second cut after 54 - is reduced to a single cut following two rounds of play.
The British Open also changes its playoff format, switching from an 18-hole playoff to a 4-hole playoff.
