Hoping For the Best - Preparing For the Worst

103 2
Having recently worked with an HR team as they were letting people go I was struck again during my conversations just how unprepared people are for losing their jobs.
Working as I do almost daily with all levels of people who are in Transition it occurs to me that being prepared for the worst is a great position to be in.
I do not mean living in fear, I do not mean cringing and hiding around corners every time you see a person from the HR team and I certainly don't mean avoiding the telephone when you see your boss's extension pop up on caller ID.
What I do mean includes
  • Getting your resume up to date.
  • Connecting with and building your network.
  • Build or update your online presence.
Let's talk about each of these and work on a few simple strategies to help you prepare: Your resume - Working on the assumption that you want to remain in the same sort of specialty that you are in today we should focus our efforts on developing the best resume we can based on our current position.
Research your position, understand the skills and attributes that are most important and write it as if you were applying for your own position.
Your network - The chances are that you have ignored your network and it has been stagnant for the last few years, after all you don't need them, right? Your network is the most valuable weapon in your arsenal when looking for your next great opportunity.
So grab your contact list and start thinking about all the people you know, reconnect and make a special effort to get in touch with those people who have slipped through the net over the last few years.
Use electronic networking to help, join alumni and professional associations, and get involved! Your online presence - Depending on the length of time you have been in employment and unconcerned about your future you may not have taken steps to start developing your online persona.
Using the appropriate tools you should begin creating your profile in such a manner as to make it accessible and attractive to recruiters.
Remember that the majority of "Reduction in Workforce" events happen because the organization is going through a financially tough time and again in the majority of cases they do not want to let people go anymore that the people themselves want to look for a new role.
