105 3
You have heard many success stories of people who have succeeded online. There are many approaches they have used from setting up a squeeze page to setting up a blog, pay-per-click campaigns to building a Facebook following. The question is €how does one who is new to the online business succeed in making an income online?'

I have been researching for these answers until I discovered that there are three keys that will make everything gel and make success online a reality for most.

Let's begin with the story of two of my friends and well call then Jane and Ted. Both Jane and Ted attended the same Internet Marketing seminar to learn how to set up an online business and market it successfully online. However Jane succeeded in making an income online. In fact she became so successful that she was able to quit her job as an air traffic controller but Ted was still working in his job but never gave up on making money online but still waiting for that perfect opportunity to come along before he begins to €jump onto the band wagon' to make a €killing on the Internet' as he would say.

Well what made all the difference you say?

Here's three reasons why Jane made it and Ted was still waiting for his ship to sail in.

(1) Know Thyself
To be successful in any endeavor including starting an online business, you got to know our strengths and weaknesses.

It is especially important to €Know Thyself' in an online business as there are always lots of distractions online. You have a marketer promoting making money via Adwords and the next minutes another one comes along and clams you can turn over a million worth of business using just pay-per-click campaigns.

I believe this was the key difference that separated Jane from Ted. Jane knew that her strengths lie in writing, having been a writer for her high school newsletter and a professional copywriter. She consistently used article marketing to drive traffic to her website. Until she was successful with this method, she stuck with this approach before trying out other methods of traffic generation. She ploughed at this for two hours every day and sacrificed her TV time and wrote articles for two hours every evening after work. She was eventually able to create ten eBooks, numerous short reports and now consults for other online marketers on their web copy.

Ted on the other hand was plagued by what we call the €next bright shiny object' syndrome. Whenever a new method of making money online came up, he was the first to know. He was into blogging, pay-per-click-ads, selling beanie babies on eBay and even tried selling to local businesses who wanted to advertise online. Although he has tried many things, but he has never sustained in any new venture long enough to see the pay off. In fact, every time he starts a new online project, he will have to invest time, money and resources to learn it. He makes a paltry income online but has never seen the big money or the passive income stream that Jane has successfully created.

(2) Be Strategic instead of being an Opportunity Seeker.
In the above example, Ted is what we call an €Opportunity Seeker'. He jumps from one opportunity to another and never gaining traction. On the other hand, Jane was able to leverage on her skills to build an online business empire. Eventually gaining financial freedom to quit her job and enjoy a lifestyle she seeks.

What Jane did was to start by writing a free Ebook which she offered for free on her website to build a subscriber list. After that, she wrote a series of follow-up emails to promote subsequent products which her target market was keen in. This helped her build a sustainable online business.

(3) Focus
Nothing ever gets done without have a clear focus. Jane knew clearly what she wanted in her life and how her online enterprise was the vehicle to get her there. She focused her efforts and resources to build up a business. Whereas Ted just kept jumping from one idea to the next.

So to build a successful business online, remember the three keys which is to €Know Thyself', get strategic and have a clear focus.
