How to Replace the Battery in a Garage Door Remote
- 1
Open the remote. There are two usual ways to open the remote. Many models are secured shut with one or two small screws on the back. Typically this is a small phillips-head screw. Loosen the screw with your screwdriver, and then open the remote. You may also have to look for a pry point and pry open the remote with a small slot-head screw driver. - 2
Some remotes are even easier. Look for a sliding door on the back -- simply push it off with your thumbs. - 3
Remove the battery(s). Typically, you'll find either standard AAA or AA type batteries or round "watch" style batteries. - 4). Buy new batteries. AA and AAA batteries can be had at any department, drug, or grocery store. Watch-style batteries are commonly available at drug store and electronics stores. Radio Shack is an excellent option. Take the old battery(s) with you to ensure you purchase a correct replacement.
- 5). Place the new batteries in the remote, close it and test operation. If your remote works properly, you're all set. If it does not, you may want to consider calling a repair service for the door.
