Manliness 201: Becoming an effective wingman

101 13
Being a man includes many things: being tough, never crying, winning various competitions, cutting limbs off, drinking beer, hunting, being good at sports, etc. Obviously another manly attribute is the ability to attract women. I don’t mean dress in all Tapout gear and go to the trashiest club you can to score retards. Think quality, not quantity. Yeah, maybe your buddy is hitting a different girl every night, but high quality, model-material, reasonably intelligent woman is going to trump his long line of blimps and the legally retarded.

So yes, scoring (quality) women is manly, but some may argue that there is a position even manlier. A position with so much class, that he puts his good buddy’s best interest before any personal benefit. This man keeps his wits sharp, and is the unsung hero of picking up girls. Of course, I’m speaking of  The Wingman.

The Wingman has various duties, but essentially he only has one goal: help his Pointman achieve his goals. Whether the Pointman is looking for a new girlfriend, an assortment of numbers or just a one night stand, the Wingman is there to help.

The Wingman-Pointman relationship is based on mutual manliness. Both parties need to be equally awesome, good friends and similarly attractive. They also need to understand that their roles are interchangeable and are based on who is on their game in any particular situation. Some argue that gameplan should be discussed before hand, but we feel that you should know your buddy well enough that you can just sense what his approach is. Not that you shouldn’t discuss a few details, but plans change and by going in depth, you set yourself up for disaster. You need to be able to fly by wire.

AskMen.com has a decent article on Wingman duties. Give it a read, but I will be covering most of it here.

It is important for the Wingman to know that he is much more than a guy to help his buddy score. He is actually the Pointman’s coach. He oversees the entire operation. Essentially, the Wingman is in charge. The Wingman has the power to abort at any time and the Pointman should have enough trust in his Wingman to follow as the Wingman may have picked up on something he didn’t. Trust is key for this to work.

One of the most essential services a Wingman provides is intelligence. He doesn’t just go after the target’s friends as a distraction, he realises their importance to the operation. Girls tell each other everything and there for, friends are the key to finding out about a target without the Pointman ever needing to ask her. With this in mind, regular interaction between Point and Wingmen are essential for success. Communication can be the difference between offending the target or leaving her in awe. Also, by engaging the Point’s friends in conversation, he is essentially providing a block for his Point. By keeping the friends busy, they will not be able to and hopefully not even think of dishing out a cock block.

Building on the Wingman’s services, he is also part story teller. It is his job to tell stories which make his Pointman look like the best guy of all time. Stories of heroics, emotional times (Hopefully these stories are fictional), general niceness, etc. are all excellent. It’s worth mentioning that if lies are told, though, be ready to remember them and improvise if you get asked about it.

Awareness is what sets a good Wingman from a great one. He needs to be able to tell when time is being wasted and when the Pointman is actually getting somewhere. Furthermore, he needs to be able to know when to chime in to keep things going and when to keep out so the spotlight remains on the Pointman. The most important aspect of awareness, though, is being willing to tell the Pointman when he’s getting nowhere. Some people don’t take criticism well and therefore, people don’t like to cause conflict, but a Wingman needs to step up and tell his Point that he’s wasting his time and the Pointman SHOULD trust his judgment and bug out. Again, that’s the trust coming into play.

I’ve stated it a few times now, but you need to trust each other. If your Wingman tells you something, don’t take offence. If you feel he is wrong, discuss it, but keep in mind that he is trying to help you and part of helping is constructive criticism. Most likely if he sees something, he is correct and any flaws you see in his logic could be subjective. For example:

Say you’ve been working on the same girl for an hour. The Wingman may see that you are getting nowhere. He may also have intel from the friends that proves you won’t get anything, but you could have a false sense for what is going on and think you’re doing great even though you aren’t. By disregarding your Wingman here, you could be wasting your time.
