Different Cultivars of Bald Cypress
- "Peve Minaret" is a dwarf form of the bald cypress that takes on a pyramidal shape as it grows to 6 feet high within 10 years' time. Peve Minaret's greenish-yellow needles change to rusty shades of brown before coming off the tree. Cold-hardy to U.S. Department of Agriculture Plant Hardiness Zone 4, this cultivar serves as a patio tree or along foundations. So named because of its yellow needles, "Peve Yellow" grows between 6 and 15 feet high. Peve Yellow is appropriate for USDA Zones 4 through 8, maturing best in damp, acidic soils.
- "Monarch of Illinois" is a taller cultivar of bald cypress, growing as high as 90 feet. Its main attraction is its great width, with the upper canopy sometimes spreading out to 70 feet. Monarch of Illinois is vulnerable to attacks by a frequent pest of the bald cypress --- spider mites. The tips of the branches on "Pendens" droop down. This large cultivar grows between 50 and 70 feet tall, spreading out between 20 and 45 feet. Pendens grows in USDA Zones 4 through 9.
- The weeping branches on "Cascade Falls," a New Zealand cultivar of bald cypress, start out horizontally before arching down to the ground. Growing to 20 feet, Cascade Falls makes a worthy specimen plant for your lawn if you live in USDA Zones 5 through 8. "Nutans" is a form of bald cypress known as pond cypress. It has a weeping form and grows between 30 and 70 feet tall. Nutans, too large for patios, is an option for planting in low-lying areas where water accumulates.
- "Shawnee Brave" grows to 80 feet tall, but it is a narrow tree, just 20 feet wide at the most. This form, known as fastigate, makes bald cypress cultivars such as Shawnee Brave suitable for accenting your landscape or for planting in groups. Another narrow cultivar is "Fastigiata," which displays all of the features of the parent species, but is narrower. You can line walkways or driveways with these fastigate forms; bald cypress will grow in ground that is not always wet, as long as it is not overly dry.
