How to Terminate Social Security Disability Benefits
- 1). Obtain a clearance to work letter or form from your doctor or therapist. The letter or form needs to indicate that your doctor has found no reason for you not to work. It should be signed and dated.
- 2). Go to your local SSA office. Tell the representative you would like to terminate your disability benefits. This will require you to complete form FFA789.
- 3). Provide the representative with any information requested on the form. Be ready to present your clearance to work letter, Social Security card, driver's license or other form of ID and documentation of previous disability benefits if necessary. These prove that you truly are requesting termination of your own benefits and give the representative quick access to information on your case.
- 4). Follow up with the SSA if you do not receive verification of benefit termination within the month. If your request is not properly processed, do not cash any benefit checks you receive, as SSA will have a record of your filing for termination.
