Types of Speed Bumps
- Most drivers and pedestrians have encountered one or more types of speed bumps. There are several different types, each with its own specific purpose when it comes to traffic and parking management. Speed humps, which are a type of speed bump, are also used in various traffic and parking situations.
- Speed bumps that are used primarily in neighborhood and residential streets to reduce speed are generally smaller in size and are made of lower impact materials, such as rubber or recycled rubber. Local speed bumps are usually not used on streets where the speed limit is less than 25 miles per hour, unless it is a particularly high-traffic area.
- Speed bumps used on commercial streets and in parking lots tend to be larger and made of higher impact materials, such as concrete or asphalt. They may also be painted orange or yellow for visibility purposes, and may be accompanied by plastic cones. Street speed bumps are designed to cause drivers to slow down significantly in order to go over them safely, serving as a reminder to drivers to watch their speed and making it impossible to speed through the areas in which speed bumps have been placed.
- Speed humps are used for the same purpose as speed bumps, but are designed to be driven over at speeds of up to 20 mph without having to stop or slow down. Unlike speed bumps, which are intended to make drivers stop abruptly, speed humps are designed to encourage a gradual stop and/or remind drivers to obey the speed limit. Speed humps are primarily used in residential areas, as opposed to commercial areas and parking lots.
