How Do I Implement Literacy Centers in a Kindergarten Classroom?

    • 1). Set up a center where kindergarten students can play with and examine reading and writing materials, such as books, magazines, paper, pencils, and keyboards for typing. Allow students to simply explore these items without having any specific assignment to do with them. Encourage students to become comfortable with literacy materials.

    • 2). Set up an alphabet center, with letter cards, alphabet strips, blocks, letter pieces, and other examples or models of the alphabet letters. Include paper and writing materials. Encourage students to practice working on the alphabet; have those who can write the entire alphabet do so and those who can't copy or trace letters for practice.

    • 3). Set up a writing center. Allow students to use a variety of writing materials, like pencils, pens or a typewriter, to write stories. Have students who have made up a story tell it out loud. Then write a translation on paper; seeing their words translated helps students get the idea that writing is a way of putting ideas into words on paper. Point out and encourage times when a student gets close in their own writing, for instance when they begin a scribble with the letter B and tell the teacher that scribble is the word ball.
