Why Post a Personal Web Page?

So why do people put up a Web page just so they can tell the world about themselves and who they are? Here are some really great answers from the Web page writers themselves.

Buck & Michael
I had a personal website a couple years back when I was single. I thought it was fun to learn the HTML and play around with it. At the time, I was also doing a site for a living history group I belong to. After a while, my personal site expanded to sort of a narcissitic thing...

poetry, photos, essays, etc. But, Michael happened by the site one day via a link from an IRC chat group I belonged to and saw my site. He contacted me, we struck up an immediate friendship and love and long story short, moved in together (he moved from AZ) last February. Since we met because of MY personal site, we decided to always keep a personal site going for both of us. It's also a great way for family and friends to "check in" on what we're up to and see new photos and such.

I wrote my Web Page as I felt it was a way of letting the world know who I am - call it an ego trip if you like. It's great getting Email of people from around the world who have visited the page. I've met some interesting people via my page. People from my old home town now living overseas wanting to make contact with lost relatives etc. Loads of people with the same surname.

I put my web site up because I wanted people to understand that everyone has feelings and has the right to be treated as a human being regardless of their body size.

Whether fat or thin, short or tall everyone is a *person* first and foremost. I hoped that visitors would think about how they have treated a fat person in their lives (perhaps even themselves) and understand that fat prejudice is one of the last scapegoats this society has and just how bad it can get.

Bigotry against race brings a public outcry, but bigotry against someone who has a body that goes against what society says is "attractive" is far too often tolerated and many times encouraged. Fat bias is based on stereotypes which peg fat people as lazy, stupid, smelly, disgusting and unhealthy...and far too many people feel that the anger and abuse we get we somehow deserve because we "brought it on ourselves" by being out of control with no will power. I wanted to expose the bigotry and stereotypes and stand up and say that it is wrong. I won't tolerate being treated like a second class citizen anymore just because someone doesn't like the way I look.

I don't expect to change the world with my web site. I just hope to make people think about their actions and attitudes. If someone comes away from my web site understanding that a person is a person, not a dress size, then maybe I have made a difference.

A Rae Of Sunshine
I created my web site initially because I am a web developer and artist, and wanted to provide a "showcase" or "portfolio" of my abilities.

I think it was partly a creative outlet, since I am largely limited to being at home due to illness. Also I figured it would be sort of an electronic calling card. As it's turned out, it has enabled me to share a lot of information about Grand Prix Legends that I acquired during the beta period, and also stories about and photos of my airplane and my flying adventures. And I've gotten to know a lot of wonderful people as a result.
