How to Choose the Oil and Fluids for a Nissan Altima

    • 1). Charge your air conditioning system with HFC-134a refrigerant, and use NISSAN A/C system oil Type R. You may substitute exact equivalents for these fluids but using any other refrigerant or lubricant may cause severe damage, which would then require the replacement of the entire air conditioning system.

    • 2). Choose 5W-30 engine oil whenever possible. You can use 10W-30 engine oil if necessary, but only if temperatures aren't expected to fall below 0 degrees Fahrenheit before your next oil change.

    • 3). Mix distilled water and ethylene glycol base antifreeze in a 50-50 solution to keep your Nissan Altima running in cold weather.

    • 4). Maintain your manual transmission with API GL-4 gear oil. 75W-90 or 80W-90 viscosities are better, so long as you intend to operate your vehicle in temperatures below 104 degrees Fahrenheit. An automatic transmission in this vehicle requires Nissan Matic D automatic transmission fluid. DEXRON-III or MERCON are acceptable substitutes if Nissan Matic D isn't available.

    • 5). Refill your power steering fluid reservoir with DEXRON-II power steering fluid or an equivalent fluid as necessary.

    • 6). Use genuine Nissan Brake Fluid or an equivalent DOT-3 fluid at appropriate maintenance intervals to keep your brakes operating properly.
