How to Remove the Coil Springs in the 1972 Mustang
- 1). Pop the hood open. Take off the upper mounting bracket bolts on the shock absorber using the 3/8-inch ratchet and socket. Lift the front of the Mustang with the jack. Place the car on jack stands.
- 2). Unbolt the lower attaching nuts on the shock absorber using the 3/8-inch ratchet and socket, and then pull the shock absorber and upper mounting bracket away from the vehicle. Remove the grease cap on the center of the wheel using the hammer, and then remove the cotter pin from the center of the hub using the cotter pin puller.
- 3). Unbolt the nut lock and adjusting nut with the 1/2-inch ratchet and socket. Remove both and pull out the wheel bearing as well. Slide the wheel, tire, hub and brake drum away from the front suspension as one unit.
- 4). Put the spring compressor through the center of the hole in the top of the strut tower. Tighten it in place with the 1/2-inch ratchet and socket until the spring is compressed and away from the control arms.
- 5). Unbolt the upper control arm from the chassis with the 1/2-inch ratchet and socket. Pull the upper control arm away from the chassis, and then loosen the spring compressor with the ratchet. Take the spring away from the car.
