How to Spool Up a Turbo

    • 1). Accelerate your vehicle from a stop by depressing the throttle pedal. The amount that you depress the throttle pedal will determine the extent to which the throttle body is opened, which regulates the amount of air that is let into the engine. Depressing the throttle pedal fully will allow the engine to intake its maximum amount of airflow, which in turn will fully spool your turbo.

    • 2). As the engine accelerates the rpm value, represented by the tachometer gauge, will climb toward the engine redline. Most production turbo vehicles will achieve a full turbocharger spool by the middle of the engine rpm range. You can hear the spool of the turbocharger as a whining or whistling noise coming from the engine bay. If your vehicle features a turbo pressure gauge, also known as a boost gauge, you can observe the turbo pressure climb as the engine is accelerated.

    • 3). Shift into the next higher gear before the rpm value reaches redline. To keep the turbo spooled, perform a quick shift, then instantly reapply the same throttle pressure as before the shift. This will maintain the flow of exhaust gas, which keeps the turbo compression wheels spooled. If your vehicle features an automatic transmission, you can keep the turbocharger spooled by simply maintaining throttle pressure.
