How to Change the Starter on a 1991 C4 Corvette
- 1). Open the hood of your Corvette and locate the battery. Loosen the clamp bolt on the negative battery cable end with a 10-millimeter wrench, then remove the cable from the battery, isolating it away from the terminals.
- 2). Place a jack under the front of the car and raise it off the ground; place a set of jack stands under the frame, then lower the jack, allowing the jack stands to support the car. Slide under the car on the passenger's side, and locate the starter motor --it is positioned near the rear of the engine block, tucked up near the oil pan.
- 3). Locate the two mounting bolts at the exhaust manifold end of the exhaust pipe, and remove them with a socket and ratchet. Some penetrating oil may be required to free them, if they have never been removed before.
- 4). Locate the mounting bolts on the driver's side manifold, and remove them with the socket and ratchet, then carefully lower the exhaust pipe, checking for clearance near the starter as you lower it. If the pipe drops far enough, then you can move on to removing the starter. If not, move to the catalytic converter at the rear of this pipe.
- 5). Remove the two mounting bolts in the flange that joins the exhaust pipe to the converter, using a socket and ratchet, then lower the entire pipe to the ground, sliding it out of the way. Move back to the starter, on the passenger's side of the car.
- 6). Locate the two electrical connectors on the rear of the starter solenoid, remove the nuts from the studs, using a wrench, then slide the connections off the studs and push them aside for now. Locate the two starter mounting bolts near the nose of the starter.
- 7). Remove the starter mounting bolts with a socket and ratchet, slide the starter away from the engine block, then lower it out of the car. Raise a new starter into place and insert the mounting bolts. Tighten the mounting bolts to 35 foot-pounds (47 Nm, if you are using a metric torque wrench), using a torque wrench.
- 8). Connect the electrical connections to the rear of the new starter motor and secure them with the retaining bolts. Raise the exhaust pipe into place and replace the mounting bolts at the exhaust manifolds and the catalytic converter.
- 9). Tighten the bolts with a socket and ratchet until they are secure, then move out from under the car and raise the car off the jack stands, using a jack. Remove the stands from under the car, then lower the car to the ground.

Connect the negative battery cable to the negative battery terminal and secure the clamp bolt of the cable end with wrench. Test the repair by starting the car.
