How to Diagnose Itching
- 1). Set up a doctor's appointment. When itching does not resolve itself with conservative measures or is severe, your doctor needs to see and evaluate the itchy area.
- 2). Answer questions your doctor asks concerning the itch. Questions the doctor may ask include how long you have had the itch, what treatments you have tried, does anything worsen the itch such as being around animals or wearing certain clothing or if you have incurred any insect bites. Your doctor will examine the area of the itch looking for signs of rash, hives, lice or scabies.
- 3). Give blood for any blood tests your doctor may request. Your doctor may order blood tests if he cannot diagnose the itch by looking at it. Blood tests reveal if an underlying medical disorder is causing the itch or if you have an iron deficiency.
