How to Get a Free Copy of a Driving Record
- 1). Write or type your request for your personal driving record. According to Alice Lynn, an employee at the National Driver Register, you need to include all of the information found on your driver's license with your request. A photocopy of your driver's license is the best way to be sure all of your information is included. Also include your contact phone number in the event more information is required.
- 2). If you need to have your driving record mailed to an address other than the one on your driver's license, make that request in bold writing so it is not overlooked.
- 3). You must have your request notarized or it will not be processed by the National Driver Register. If you don't know a notary who is willing to notarize your request for free, check with your bank to see if it offers notary services. Most banks offer this service to account holders for free.
- 4). Mail your notarized request to: National Driver Register, USDOT/NHTSA West Building, NVS-422 1200 New Jersey Avenue, SE Washington, DC 20590. You do not need to include a self-addressed, stamped envelope. The National Driver Register will mail your driving record back to you for free.
- 5). If you haven't heard from the National Driver Register within 10 business days of mailing your notarized request, you can call to check on the status of your request at the toll-free telephone number 888-851-0436.
- 6). Keep in mind that the National Driver Register will only have information that has been reported by the states in which you've held a driver's license. You may need to contact each state's motor vehicle department for a detailed history, which may require a small fee.
