How to Map a Port for uTorrent
- 1). Start µTorrent and click "Options." "Select "Preferences" and choose the "Connection" submenu. Enter the port number you want µTorrent to use when sharing a file. DotNetWizard.net recommends using a port above 45000 to avoid conflicts with other applications and Windows services, which typically use lower port numbers. Uncheck the "Enable UPnP port mapping" and "Randomize port each start" check boxes and click "OK."
- 2). Log into your router to open the port you assigned to µTorrent. Open a web browser such as Microsoft Internet Explorer or Mozilla Firefox and type the router's IP address into the address bar. Consult the user manual to determine the router's IP address, as it varies from model to model.
- 3). Enter the username and password for the router when prompted. Consult the router's manual if you are unsure of the username and password. Change the default password if you have not already to secure your network from unauthorized access, particularly if using a wireless network.
- 4). Locate the router's port forwarding settings. Each manufacturer installs custom software on its router, so the graphical user interface varies from brand to brand. Consult the manual if you cannot locate options for port forwarding.
- 5). Enter the IP address for the computer with µTorrent installed. If unsure of the IP address, click on the Windows "Start" menu and select "Run." Type "cmd" and click "OK" to open a DOS window. Type the command "ipconfig" to view the computer's IP address.
- 6). Enter the port number assigned to µTorrent in both the "Start" and "End" text boxes in the "Port Range" menu. Select "TCIP" in the "Protocol" drop-down menu. Type "BitTorrent" into the "Application" text box so that you will remember what program you assigned the port to. Check "Enable" and save the router's settings.
