The thought of packing boxes and moving can be overwhelming and stressful. But knowing that you are moving to Hawaii, one of the most beautiful areas in the world, makes it all worth it. Whether you are relocating for a job or will be stationed in Hawaii with the military, there are certain requirements and special arrangements that need to be added to your checklist prior to your move. - When packing for your move to Hawaii, be sure to place all of your personal documents in a carry-on bag so the information will be easily located. In order to enroll a child in school, Hawaii requires a child's birth certificate, previous report card and medical records with up-to-date immunizations and a physical examination within the previous 12 months.
- When moving to Hawaii, you may also want to consider whether you want to pack your furniture and other bulky items. Sometimes the cost of shipping these items may be higher than their fair market value. Be sure to research shipping companies. Many of these service providers can take up to six weeks to deliver and require their movers to pack your items to prevent damage during shipment. When planning your move, research some of the local furniture retailers and outlets in Hawaii to determine whether the cost would be lower to purchase furniture or pay the shipping costs.
- Another item on your checklist when moving to Hawaii is finding a shipping service for your vehicle. Shipping services typically charge between $800 and $1,360 per vehicle from the west coast. Prior to scheduling your vehicle's shipment, you will need to obtain a notarized letter from your creditor or lessor acknowledging they are aware of the vehicle's planned shipment. According to Ship My Vehicle.com, customers should prepare their vehicle for shipment by making sure it is not full of gas; no personal items are left in the vehicle; alarm systems are disabled; there are 6 inches of ground clearance; and the vehicle is in safe operating condition.
- If you have pets moving with you to Hawaii, you need to be aware of the state's quarantine law. The law is required to protect Hawaiian residents and pets from contracting rabies and any accompanying diseases. When bringing your pet into the state, have your pet's rabies-shot records to reduce your pet's time in quarantine to five days or less. Your pet must have had two shots during his or her lifetime and the recent shot cannot be less than 90 days before entering Hawaii. Original or certified copies of these records as well as an OIE-FAVN rabies blood test and microchip are required. Documentation must be sent more than 10 days prior to arrival to the Animal Quarantine Station, 99-951 Halawa Valley Street, Aiea, Hawaii 96701. Check the Department of Agriculture's website for additional information on importing a pet into the state of Hawaii.
