Christmas Tree Story - The Smelly Christmas Tree
Well I have a funny Christmas tree moment we had in 1998.
At least it is funny now.
It wasn't so much then.
We put our tree up like every other year with Christmas specials on the television, egg nog, and snacks a plenty all was great.
The next morning when the children were off to school and my husband at work there was an odour from the tree that was rank.
As the day progress the odour increased.
I called the Christmas tree farm to ask them what it could be.
The kind woman stated the tree could be sprayed by a deer, and if we wanted to bring it back she would allow us to cut another.
The thought of taking all the decorations off was too much to bear.
As you know it takes hours to decorate a tree to perfection.
I went out for a few hours and I returned to a smell that met me at the door that was so overwhelming I thought my poor puppy must be asphyxiated from the smell.
So I went to work to investigate this odour further.
I thought if I could locate the branches affected I could cut them off and that would do it, without damaging the fullness of the tree.
So with my sniffer I started to get real close to the smell when what was looking straight at me was two beady bulging eyes with the most swollen mouse body that you have ever seen.
The mouse was impaled by a branch.
The heat of the house must of swollen the dead rodent.
The size was approximately the a large grapefruit with a head the size of a clementine.
I became the superwoman I knew I always was, that Christmas tree was out on our front lawn with all the decorations still on it, faster than a speeding bullet.
I did not care about the decorations that took hours the night before to decorate.
It was gone.
Unfortunately many of my vintage Christmas bulbs were broken in my bionic feat.
To this day I always check our Christmas tree before we buy it.
Lesson learned.
Check out that Christmas tree before you bring it home and then again before you bring it into the house.
It is evidently quite common that deer can spray a tree and little critters are found in trees.
Often alive.
So enjoy your real Christmas tree and its beautiful evergreen scent.
